Ice Off Uncovered
For the last several weeks the weather has been warming the ice and releasing more cold water onto the lake surface. The fish will choose to become trapped in the top surface water of the lake for this short period of time. This is a great opportunity to get out and sight fish for the large trout that have over wintered.
Success comes from being patient; the presentations must be perfect for the moment. I've had great success for hours on one pattern then have it turn cold instantly.
Now is the time to get your gear ready for the season then check out our fly patterns. Read the regulations for the water you are going to fish and collect topographical maps for these lakes via the Internet. Charge the battery for your fish finder and blast off to ice off .
Northern Climates ( Ice Off Check List)
Things To Do
- Inspect your craft for rips, holes or tear's. Patch accordingly then inflate your pontoon or float tube and leave 75% inflated overnight and check for leeks.
- Soak waders in the shower (outside only) and leave hanging to inspect for holes.
- Organize all your flies you tied this winter.
- Purchase a new fishing license before it's nice out!
- Read the new fishing regulations and ensure you understand them. Click here to view the online fishing regulations by Region.
- Clean fly line, replace if worn or frayed (a reason to buy new stuff Wahoo!!!).
- Purchase new tippet material. If you are like me and forget to keep it stored in a dark place in a plastic bag, this is a must.
Early Season Fly Patterns
Food is somewhat scarce and the larger trout will devour a well-presented meal.
Leech

Dragonfly Nymph
- Color: Depending on the lake bottom a medium olive green to a dark olive.
- Length: 1.25" - 1.5" in length
Black Wooly Bugger
- Various sizes and colors depending on the lake bottom.
- Use a slow presentation on the bottom and near any shallow weed beds.
The Fish are low on energy and tired from a long winter, release them quickly and play them fast.
